Formulation guide

How to Formulate a Soap Recipe

A good formula is a documented set of decisions, not only a list of ingredients.

Start with the product you want to make

Define whether the product is a solid bar, liquid soap, soft soap, hybrid soap, or a non-soap formulation. This determines the alkali system and changes the production method.

Build a purposeful oil blend

Choose oils for a reason: hardness, cleansing, conditioning, stable lather, creamy lather, oxidation resistance, availability, cost, or label positioning. Avoid treating recommended property ranges as absolute rules.

Calculate lye from verified SAP data

Every oil requires a different quantity of lye. Confirm the exact ingredient variant, select NaOH or KOH, account for purity, and apply the intended superfat or lye discount.

Choose a liquid method

Water can be described as a water-to-lye ratio, lye concentration, or percentage of oil weight. Record the method as well as the value so another maker can reproduce the formula.

Document, test, and revise

Save the exact formula before production, assign a batch code, record observations, and preserve revisions. Evaluate the cured product before making performance or safety claims.
